How Exelon used Interfacing’s tools to unify operations, improve performance, and drive standardization after a major utility merger.
After the merger of Peco and Unicom to form Exelon Corporation, the newly formed Exelon Power Team faced a high-stakes operational challenge—mapping and modeling approximately 150 business processes in under four months. As one of the United States’ largest energy providers and its top nuclear power operator, Exelon needed to rapidly align workflows, standardize procedures, and deliver a business plan that connected strategy to execution.
The key to this transformation? A scalable, enterprise-wide business process mapping initiative that could bridge operational knowledge and provide long-term agility.
To achieve its objectives, Exelon engaged Interfacing Technologies, leveraging the Charter (Visio add-on) and Designer process simulation tools. These platforms enabled Exelon’s team to:
Create accurate, interactive 3D models of their core operations
Build standardized to-be processes to support post-merger integration
Accelerate onboarding with a short learning curve and centralized access
Upon completion, the modeled processes were embedded in Exelon’s business plan and presented to the board of directors. This formalized blueprint not only defined Exelon’s new operational backbone but also empowered team members to take ownership of their workflows and outcomes.
With Interfacing’s support, Exelon transformed its merger into a strategic advantage:
A full process-based portal was developed, allowing real-time access to standardized procedures
Teams across the Power Team division could access, revise, and share process knowledge
Modeled processes became the foundation for cross-functional communication, project planning, and performance improvement
The initiative aligned company-wide process standards with corporate goals—positioning Exelon as a process-led energy innovator
As Exelon evolved, the framework built during this initiative allowed for ongoing refinement. Some processes remained optimal, while others were revised using Interfacing’s tools, enabling continuous improvement across all levels of the business.
Phase two of the initiative focused on deploying a company-wide process knowledge portal. This dynamic environment gives all departments access to shared process models, supporting improved decision-making, faster innovation, and unified change management.
With over 16,500 megawatts of nuclear capacity and a 5 million customer base, Exelon’s Power Team stands as a model of how utilities can turn mergers into a foundation for excellence through process mapping and standardization.
